Subramanian Swamy, one of the senior BJP leaders, has filed a suit in the Supreme Court demanding that the Rama Bridge be declared a national monument. The then Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, which was then the central government, had planned to implement the Sethu Samudra project in 2013. Subramanian Swamy, who opposed the , continued the case in the Supreme Court alone. In this, he said that the project should be implemented in the alternative way, as it is one of the symbols of Hinduism and that damaging it would cause religious controversy. The case was heard in the Supreme Court today. The Supreme Court Chief Justice Additional Solicitor General Pingi Anand said, 'The Rama Bridge can not be removed for the Sethu Samudra project. It has religious symbolism. There is a possibility of religious controversy if it is removed or damaged. So the Central Government is thinking of implementing the project. ' He also requested that the case be dismissed, as the Central Government's proposal was given.
